Athletes often wear mouthguards in order to protect their mouth during high-impact sports. A mouthguard also works effectively to prevent you from grinding your teeth as you sleep. The mouthguard acts as a barrier between your upper and lower teeth. Many guards are constructed using molds that you can shape to fit comfortably into your mouth.

Limit Daily Caffeine Intake

Caffeine is a stimulant that is often used to ward off drowsiness and keep you alert. Therefore, your body, including your mouth, has a difficult time relaxing while there is caffeine in your system. Teeth grinding is often the cause of excessive stress or tension that is placed on your jaw area. Caffeine will only make the tension worse and increase the grinding. If you drink several servings of caffeine a day it is important to slowly reduce your intake in order to avoid potential withdrawal symptoms.

Chewing items other than food is a habit that is detrimental to your teeth. The action of chewing on things like pencils and pens cause your jaw to stiffen and eventually lock up. While this habit may help you to relieve stress created from other factors,  it also builds tension in your jaw area.
