A stress fracture is one of the most frustrating injuries that can happen to an athlete. It is one of those injuries that have a tendency to stick around longer than normal.  If you suspect you have a stress fracture, then you should contact orthopaedic specialists for your treatment options.

Rest

When a doctor first diagnoses you with a stress fracture, he or she will recommend rest. This means a decrease in physical activities icing your foot and elevating your foot. Depending on which bone is fractured, you will have to wear a cast or splint to immobilize it. To further relax you, your doctor may also prescribe a painkiller.

Decreased in Swelling

You can start putting partial weight on your foot after the swelling goes down. Creases in your skin are a sign that the swelling has gone down. However, you may still need to use a walking stick or crutches.

You can start full weight bearing two weeks after being diagnosed with a stress fracture, according to WebMD. Full weight bearing means fully extending your legs while walking with a stick or crutches. This is the closest thing to walking normal. Weight bearing helps you to maintain flexibility and recover faster.

Avoid the Activity that Caused the Injury

If you hurt your foot playing basketball or another physical activity, then you should not play the sport for the next six to eight weeks. Rushing back from the injury can delay your healing. It can also cause permanent damage.

May Require Surgery

If your foot is not healing and responding to minor treatment, then you may have a severe stress fracture that requires surgery. Joel Embiid is an NBA player who plays center for the Philadelphia 76ers who suffered a stress fracture in his right foot. He had a crack in the navicular bone in his right foot. A surgeon performed a procedure on Embiid's foot that required two screws to be inserted into his foot. This injury prevented Embiid from playing in the entire 2014 – 2015 NBA season.

Unfortunately for Embiid, he has suffered another setback on June 14, 2015 while going through rigorous workouts and may need another procedure.  Navicular stress fractures are one of the more serious and complicated injuries. It is important to not rush back too soon from stress fracture injuries. You are putting yourself at risk for reinjury and more downtime.
