Lifestyle Changes For Diabetes Control

My name is Tony Richards and when I turned 40 years old I began having unusual health symptoms including a powerful thirst and numbness in my hands. I went to see my doctor and after running tests he determined that I had diabetes. My doctor prescribed medicine for my condition and he also told me to make some lifestyle changes or the diabetes would get worse. I didn't want that to happen so I began researching ways to control diabetes. After implementing these ideas, my condition actually got better and I was able to reduce the amount of medication I was taking. If your doctor has diagnosed you with diabetes, it's very beneficial for you to read my blog so your condition doesn't worsen. I hope that by following this blog, it will help you to control your diabetes too.

3 Conditions A Neurosurgeon Can Diagnose And Treat

For Content

A neurosurgeon specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the nervous system. These conditions include injuries to or disorders of the brain, spinal column, and peripheral nerves. Here are three such conditions a neurosurgeon can diagnose and treat.

1. Carotid Artery Disease

The carotid arteries are blood vessels that deliver blood to the brain and head. When fatty deposits clog these particular blood vessels, it results in carotid artery disease. If you have high blood pressure, use tobacco, are obese, or have a family history of carotid artery disease, you have an increased chance of getting this condition.

There are usually no obvious symptoms of carotid artery disease in its earliest stages. If left unnoticed, carotid artery disease increases the risk of stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA). The signs of a TIA usually come on suddenly.

Signs of a TIA include:

  • Numbness in the face or limbs.
  • Trouble speaking.
  • Dizziness.
  • Severe headache.

In the event of a stroke or TIA, it's important to get medical attention right away. If a stroke does occur, a neurosurgeon will need to perform a carotid endarterectomy soon after the stroke.

2. Chronic Pain

If you have pain that occurs several months or longer, you have a common condition called chronic pain. This type of pain is oftentimes the result of an injury. The most common types of chronic pain include:

  • Back pain
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Nerve pain

Chronic pain is also a symptom of certain health conditions including fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and shingles. Treatment for chronic pain depends upon the cause and what type of pain it is. In some cases, a steroid injection may be all that's needed to reduce the pain.

In other cases, however, a neurosurgeon will perform a surgical procedure to treat chronic pain. Some of these procedures include radiofrequency rhizotomy, microvascular decompression, deep brain stimulation (DBS), or spinal cord stimulation.

3. Vertebral Fractures

A vertebral fracture occurs when the bony block in the spine collapses. It's usually caused by trauma to the spine. You can also get a vertebral fracture if you have another medical condition that weakens the bones. Oftentimes, a vertebral fracture causes severe pain and even deformities in the spine. A vertebral fracture can also cause a loss of height.

In many cases, a vertebral fracture can be treated with immobilization in a brace. A neurosurgeon will treat severe cases of vertebral fractures with surgery. Surgical options for vertebral fractures include vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.
